Patent No. U.S. 6,447,845 B1
The Dow Corning Corporation has
been awarded a patent for the preparation
of a barrier coating. It is comprised
of applying an organic acid to a
substrate to form a layer and drying
the layer, wherein the organic acid has
at least two acid groups and is selected
from the group consisting of a graft
polymer, a polybasic carboxylic acid, a
polymer of an unsaturated carboxylic
acid and a co-polymer of an unsaturated
carboxylic acid. The organic acid is
mixed with one or more components
selected from the group consisting of a
compound of the formula RaX3-
aSi(CH2)nY, wherein each R is selected
from the group consisting of a hydrogen
atom and a hydrocarbon group
with one to 10 carbon atoms; each X
selected from the group consisting of
an alkoxy group with one to four carbon
atoms, a halogen atom, an oxime
group, and a axyloxy group; Y is
selected from the group consisting of
an epoxy group, a methacryloxy group,
an acryloxy group, —NH2, and NH—
(CH2)bNH2; a is from zero to three; n
is an integer from one to 12; and b is
an integer from one to six; a condensation
catalyst; a solvent selected from
the group consisting of an alcohol, an
ether, an ester, a hydrocarbon and
water; and a filler selected from the
group consisting of silicone resins, silica,
magnesium oxide, clay, diatomaceous
earth, calcium carbonate, finely
ground quartz and layered silicates.
